1. Concentrated Beneficiaries, Diffuse Costs
The industries that benefit from continued fossil fuel investment are concentrated, well-resourced and politically organised. The costs of continued emissions are diffuse, distributed across millions of households over decades. Political systems weight concentrated voices more heavily than diffuse ones — even when the diffuse voices represent the larger group.
2. Time Horizons
Climate damage builds across decades. Political cycles run on three-year intervals. The mismatch creates a structural bias toward decisions whose costs appear after the next election.
3. The Honest Conversation Hasn't Happened
Climate transition involves real trade-offs: stranded assets, regional employment shifts, increased energy bills during transition periods, infrastructure investment. The political class on most sides has been reluctant to discuss these trade-offs honestly, preferring vague commitments that don't require explaining anything difficult to voters.
The honest conversation — "this is what we need to do, this is what it will cost, this is how we're going to share the cost fairly" — has been largely absent from Australian climate politics. Its absence is the deepest reason the trajectory hasn't shifted faster.
What "Listening to the Science" Would Actually Look Like
Six policy actions consistent with the science as currently understood:
- End new fossil fuel project approvals. The IPCC has been clear: no new fossil fuel infrastructure is consistent with 1.5°C alignment.
- Phase out fossil fuel subsidies. Public money currently working against the stated target. The accounting case is obvious; the political case is harder.

- Mandate emissions reduction across major sectors. Transport, industry, agriculture. Carrots haven't been sufficient; sticks need to be added.
- Climate-aligned procurement. Government spending is one of the largest market levers in any economy. Aligned procurement shifts entire supply chains.
- Honest transition funding. Direct support for affected workers and regions during the transition. The fair transition is the politically sustainable transition.

What Households Can Do

- Engage civic life. Contact MPs on specific climate policy. Support advocacy organisations. Show up at community discussions. Climate policy is shaped by sustained civic pressure.
