Responsible business

Let’s finish what we started.

Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has.

Big positive changes are happening, from offices to nations – disposable straws, bottled water, plastic bags and disposable cups are being banned.

Ten years in, we are here to finish what we started.

We believe collective individual action is a powerful catalyst for change. Carrying KeepCup is a signifier of intention of the world we want to live in, so it’s important to that we represent those values as a business.

We believe in the power of cultural influence, not with a top down style maker approach, but a belief that the everyday choices we make shape the future. As sales in reusables soar, more than ever our focus is on impact. We measure our success in use and reuse, and increasingly in how workplaces, events and cities are going disposable free.

Reducing our footprint

Our approach has always been to design a strong and responsible supply chain to reduce waste and energy consumption across our entire business. Local manufacture is a strong building block; it means we invest in the community in which we operate, and we reduce the environmental cost of logistics. Local manufacture supports the transition to a circular economy.

When we started our business, we were a local solution to a local problem, so we manufactured in Australia. Ten years later we remain Australian made for the Australian market. In 2016 we began production in the UK to reduce our transit footprint. The savings are not financial; they are environmental.

Our retail boxes are made from Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified cardboard. The insert brochures included with each KeepCup are printed on FSC certified paper. All are manufactured and printed locally, in Australia and the UK.

Our outer cartons are made from 100% recycled cardboard. They’re manufactured locally at each of our three global hubs; Australia, the UK and the USA.

Our Australian office has been solar powered since 2015, and in 2019 our UK office went solar.

Our approach to logistics

There is no such thing as free freight. We apply shipping costs to every order – this is a decision we made as a business to highlight that freight always has a cost, particularly for the environment.

We ask customers to be conscious of the environmental costs of shipping goods and consider this impact as we do, in our purchasing decisions. We encourage you to shop locally and support your local cafés.

Life Cycle Assessment
(LCA) 2018

We commissioned Edge Environmental to assess the environmental footprint of our products against single and multi-use alternatives. The study employed Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology ISO 14040:2006, and was peer reviewed by Eunomia UK in July 2018.

The study was conducted to identify hot spots in our supply chain and to dispel some of the greenwash around materials and end of life solutions. The biggest reminder for us, is that use is our most powerful opportunity for advocacy and positive change – it’s not enough to sell a product, we need to try and ensure each product is used and reused.

It’s all about use. The best reusable is the one you use.

Being accountable

We’ve been a B Corporation since 2014, and are one of the founding B Corps in Australia. Being part of this community inspires us to pursue better ways to manufacture, reduce our impact on the environment and make sure our products are fit for purpose.

B Corps measure and help businesses improve performance beyond profit, with a focus on transparency, environmental impact, community and employee wellbeing.

As Sedex members, we visit and work directly with our overseas manufacturers who are regularly audited as part of a collaborative process of improvement.

We believe it’s important to work with suppliers and grow our circle of influence – the more people we take on the sustainability journey, the broader its impact. We were the very first customer of the company in China that makes our silicone bands.

The “tick a box” approach is well understood in the audit industry, which can push people to large factories to make compliance an easy solution. In order to take a small supplier through our audit process, we have worked together since 2010 to transform regulatory requirements into practical business changes, so they are constantly improving as they grow.

1% For The Planet

2018 saw growing momentum in reduce and reuse – plastic straws, single-use plastic bags, disposable cups and cutlery being banned by individuals, businesses and governments. Continued decisive action is required by business and by government to reduce the systemic waste and consumption that is destroying ecosystems and committing our descendants to a bleak future.
